here in san francisco. of course across the city a lot of these trees starting to come down and workers san francisco's recycling program want to make sure the trees don't end up in the landfill. instead they want to put them to good use, eventually turning them into renewable energy. this is the demonstration just about an hour ago here outside city hall as workers put a couple dozen trees in to the chipper. crews from the recycling contractor will begin collecting people's old trees starting next week. workers expect in the end to recycle more than 500-tons of trees. the manager said all of those wood chips can be burned. the heat turns the generator and creates power. when you put your old tree out on the curb for pick up make sure to take everything off it. >> if the lights and ornaments still on it we can't put it in the chipper, it'll contaminate the load, ruin the product. if it's not stripped of all those things that will go into the trash and to the landfill. we don't want that. >> reporter: if you live in san francisco, you can pit your tree out on the curb starting ne

the city. is a lot of people will not want to take their cars. bay area transit agencies are making it easier for them to leave their cars behind by offering free rides in some cases and extended service. starting with bart. bart you will still have to pay for your tickets but their trains will be running late tonight until 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. but in order to avoid congestion, trains will not be stopping at all the stations. keep this in mind if you are riding the pepper bay point train it will stop at the embarcadero station. make sure you go to the right place to catch your ride home. muni is also extending service at the west portal and embarcadero stations. muni will run until 4:00 a.m. new years day. and fourth and king muni will run until 2:15 a.m.. muni will be free for riders starting from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.. caltrain and samtrans will be giving free rides. the last train will leave at 2:15 a.m.. there are a lot of options, three free options for those looking to enjoy new years eve celebrations in san francisco. live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 n

. further investigation has revealed that the car may have actually been stolen from redwood city. and investigators believe that the thief or thieves were after iphones or i pats at the store. nor smash and grab to tell you about, this one happened on sunday at radio shock in walnut creek just a few miles from here. we spoke to the store manager offcamera saying the thieves got a crowbar and used that but they didn't get anything because the glass is shatter proof. the store has been hit at least seven times by thieves this year alone. and they're looking at improving security measures at ta store as well as this -- at that store as well as this location as well. including placing security cameras at different locations. it is too early by investigate torious say these are related but it is something where these types of crimes happen around the holidays. investigators will continue to look at any surveillance camera footage. live in concord, brian floores cbs 5 eyewitness news. >>> oakland police confirm three people are under arrest in the shooting deaths of two teenaged girls. ktvu
